MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directed the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and the Department of Education (DepEd) to coordinate in providing higher Service Recognition Incentives (SRI) for public school teachers.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said the government is aiming to increase public school teachers’ SRI from P18,000 to P20,000.

The SRI refers to the yearly financial incentive granted to government employees to recognize their commitment and dedication to quality and responsive public service.

According to the PCO, Marcos then ordered the DBP and DepEd to “explore budgetary measures to ensure the SRI increase for DepEd personnel can be implemented, while remaining mindful of fiscal responsibilities.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara, for his part, expressed thanks to Marcos, tagging the increase “a morale booster” for public school teachers.

“This initiative underscores our shared goal of empowering teachers and reinforcing their critical role in shaping the future of Filipino learners,” Angara said.

Meanwhile, in a chance interview in Bulacan, when asked if the SRI for all government employees will also be increased, Marcos responded:

“Teachers are a special category, so we have to handle that individually,” he said.

The PCO then said that the implementation and timeline for the increased SRI will be announced as soon as the DBM and DepEd finalize the necessary funding mechanisms.
